PTE SAMPLE ESSAY Environment
No one can overlay the fact that the planet we live in is at serious threat. Increasing number of natural calamities like Tsunami, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes have given us repeated warning signals. Government, corporates and individuals must work together to fight this by fostering organic lifestyle. This essay will outline causes, responsibilities, and solution of the issue.
Our environment has been seriously afflicted because of two main reasons. Firstly, rapid industrialization has led to massive deforestation. Secondly, urbanisation of rural areas to support industries has augmented CO2 emission. Due to these issues our planet has witnessed serious natural disasters that never existed before.
It is everyone’s responsibility as some day or the other everyone will have to face the pangs of our own deeds. Since the government has the most power to design policies that will restrict such deforestation and industrialisation, they should take the responsibility to fight this issue.
Since we are all in this mess together, we have to take collective steps in order to curtail global warming. Authorities should make strict laws against environment polluters. Companies should move towards producing recyclable and eco-friendly products. As an individual, we have the power to make a conscious choice towards organic lifestyle, we must excel is all possible options.
In a nutshell, we have created this problem and we are responsible for it together. So only collective measures towards living in harmony with nature will solve our problems. Thus, it is necessary for individuals, corporates, and lawmakers to work hand in hand to combat this problem.

The environment we live in is in danger due to various problems. What are the underlying causes? Who is responsible for combating this?
Time 20 minutes; 200 to 300 words (PTE); 40 minutes, 250 words (IELTS)
This essay is useful for IELTS candidates as well.
Introduction to this essay should include an explanation of the statement “the environment we live in is in danger due to various problems” along with MENTION of causes. Leave explanation of these causes to body paragraphs.
A sample introduction could be: “Since the dawn of 21st century, we’re witnessing numerous environmental disasters in various parts of the world. These include melting of glaciers, acid rain, floods and droughts, and severe air impurities (pollution) due to pollution emitted from our factories and vehicles, and rapid deforestation.” (43 words)
Note: I’ve abstained from using ‘pollution’ multiple times. Instead, I’ve used ‘impurities’.
In the introduction, I’ve mentioned not only the problems our environment is facing but also the underlying causes. You need to devote TWO body paragraphs to devote the two causes mentioned – pollution emitted from our factories and vehicles; rapid deforestation.
Body Paragraph 1: Reason 1 (pollution emitted from our factories and vehicles); Example 1.
Body Paragraph 2: Reason 2 (rapid deforestation); Example 2.
Body Paragraph 3: Who is responsible for combating this? Well, I think suitable action should be taken at three levels – individual, organisational and governmental. Here’s a sample paragraph.
“The underlying causes leading to several environmental issues can be addressed by taking action at three levels – governmental, organisational and individual. Governments of various countries need to act together to solve global issues such as climate change. For instance, all countries recently decided to fight climate change at Paris talks in March 2017. However, mere governmental commitment and policy are not enough. Companies and individuals need to implement this on ground to make a tangible impact. Several organisations and individual groups have committed to growing new trees and adopting existing ones to improve environment’s air and soil quality.” (98 words)
You can reduce the number of words to suit your essay length. Finally, its time to conclude the essay. As I’ve written several times before, a powerful conclusion should include the elements of FUTURE and IMPACT.
“Solving these environmental issues in a fixed time frame at various levels is required to create a sustainable earth for future human generations.” (23 words)
I’ve limited conclusion to just 23 words because the penultimate paragraph was 98 words long. You can make suitable adjustments to suit your needs.
